Hot sauce recommendations!
I used to be a big time Frank’s consumer, then moved on to the Chipotle Tabasco. Then, I was at the store and bough a bottle of Texas Pete because it was cheap. I found it not spicy enough and thought the heat didn’t linger long enough, so I moved to the next cheapest, coming to...
Louisiana Hot Sauce. A 12oz bottle goes for about $1.77 at Kroger and lasts me a little over a week. I like the consistency of it (a bit thicker than the others), the color, the endurance of the heat, and the smokiness of it. I put it on eggs in the morning (it goes incredibly well with the creaminess of soft yolk) and lately, I’ve started putting it straight onto toast.
My room mate is a big Sriracha fan, but I’m not big on it. It has a weird taste to my tongue.
So, Oppo, give me hot sauce recommendations. I’m not big on “smoky” so much as the dry and somewhat savory heat of Louisiana style sauces.
Update:
posting this around lunch hour was a mistake. All of you have great recommendations and I’ve been salivating thinking about hot sauce since noon.

I like the chipotle Cholula. It’s not the hottest thing but it has a good rich flavor.

Regular Cholula is top notch.
I was born and raised in Latin America. Hot sauce runs through my veins.

Everyday Carries : Frank’s or Crystal; occasionally Texas Pete or Louisiana.
Pizza : Huy Fong Sriracha ($$) , which I’ve been using since before hipsters, so I’m like a meta-hipster.
Mexican : Cholula
NEVER, EVER
: Tabasco

Cholula is the best Mexican hot sauce, regardless of which of the variants you try . I have several of the flavors but buy the big two-pack at Costco frequently. We had a taste test when I visited my folks a few years back, and out of the 8 sauces we tried it was 3 for 3. I use it everywhere, and frequently in soups just to make them have some flavor.
If you’re talking Sriracha, you’re probably talking about the infamous cock sauce, right? That stuff is not that good. Too hot, no complexity, and kind of gritty. What you need to find is the original Sriracha, Sriraja Panich. This is the good stuff. I buy mine on eBay since I can’t find it in local stores, but it’s the real deal.

I like hot sauces that don’t taste like vinegar. So that rules out plenty for me.
Sriracha is always a safe bet. There’s also this you can find at Indian grocery stores... it’s quite good
also try the maggi spicy ketchup

I was at a restaurant yesterday, and there was a bottle of hot sauce on the table. I could see it was Texas Pete, but did not read the label before using it liberally on my home fries.
Holy Crap, who knew there was a thing called Hotter Texas Pete?
For me it was only heat, when I was expecting normal Texas Pete.

I like Maggi’s Tamarina, it’s very good on a turkey and swiss. My grandpa is from New Delhi, so I’m a big fan of Indian-style spicy. I’ll see if I can find that at the grocery. I can only find the Tamarina at A
sian groceries though.

do you find the green tea kit kats?

Yeah, the clear bottle with the green cap. I really don’t like it, I can’t say specifically what I dislike, but it’s just... not good.
I’ll shop around for that. I feel kinda weird buying food on ebay. Amazon feels less sketchy for foodstuff, but I don’t have an Amazon account anymore.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:16 |

Would you put Crystal closer to Frank’s or Louisiana?
Weirdly, I associa
te Cholula with pizza moreso than Frank’s. I’m game for the Chipotle Tabasco, but really only in a bowl of ramen.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:17 |

But this sauce provides the same depth of flavor with a more engaging taste.

Nothing makes me sadder than when I ask a server for hot sauce and they bring me Tabasco.

I’m not a “hot & spicy” fan, but I find these shows very amusing.
Maybe try one or two of the sauces they use on the show?

If you ever find yourself around Cincinnati they sell it at both of the Jungle Jim’s locations.

Make your own. My go to hot sauce is Tapatio, with Valentina as an alternative.

Usually when I need a new hot sauce I either head to one of those weirdo places in the mall (or equ) , or the Asian grocery. Current favorite into anything liquid is sambal/”chili garlic paste”. Not super hot, but really pleasant flavor and burn.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:26 |

Cholula is the best generic hot sauce I would say - easy to find at restaurants, stores without issue.
Our recent go to favorite is Secret Aadvark (habanero flavor) - it’s local to us in Portland, OR but believe you can find it online as well. Excellent flavor and kick.
Recently I’ve found it a bit too spicy after an extended stint of mild food for various reasons - but that’s mostly my fault, not the hot sauce’s.

The stuff I bought came out of TN. I’m in MO and mom’s in CA and we both received them on the same day. I sent a bottle to my mom for mothers day. When she was out here taking care of me after my surgery back in February we searched all over town trying to find that sauce, in all of the little Asian markets and all the places that said they carried it, to no avail.
My only problem is that I tend to use too much as it’s much stronger than Cholula. I have to remember to use only half as much otherwise I may make my food border on being too hot to eat.
As you can see, I like my hot sauces, as well as all manner of Asian seasonings (don’t get me started on the spice cabinet...)
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:28 |

I have some of that in my office at work, I put it on the leftovers I eat for lunch, when they’re inevitably kinda bland on re-heat. I also don’t go crazy with spices at home because kids won’t eat it.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:28 |

I like tobasco if its in soups or chillis, but prefer Frank’s on solid foods.
I agree, Sriracha tastes bad, like too much garlic or something . I am not a fan.

I bought my wife a gallon of it for her birthday, she loves it.

woah bigly picture... sorry about that
its got a lovely garlicky flavour and its more of a paste than a sauce
its also blow your head off hot (to me at least) so i only put a lil bit of the stuff in/on food... this jar will probably last me a year

as an aside, if you value your sphincter, do not get wings with the “Blazin’” sauce from BWW. especially do not put this on them as well:

Love Jungle Jim’s. I went there and bought a coconut. My friend bought a lobster and showed it Cincinnati, then lost it in Covington.

Secret Aardvark is widely recommended. I’ll find some online, thanks!

I like how the last two seasons they’ve really kicked it up with the “last dab” sauce being 2 million Scoville. That has to taste like magma . Dave’s Ghost Pepper is about 630,000 and I can put away a half dozen wings with that stuff on them before it starts to overwhelm me.

I’m not exactly a connoisseur, but I do really like Cholula, and Tapatio is decent, too.
I’ll use Tabasco only if nothing else is available.
Based on comments, I need to find Texas Pete’s and try it.
It’s not a sauce exactly but I’m a big fan of red chili paste - like you get at a Chinese restaurant with dim sum. Way better than Sriracha, which has a funk that I’m not a huge fan of.
I tend to prefer foods that are naturally spicy with peppers over adding hot sauce - except breakfast and fried rice, I guess.

I’d love to, but have no clue where to start. Plus, roommates hate spice, so I can’t bomb the house with spicy air.

Is easy. I pickle my own jalapeños and when i want to make a sauce i just grab some.
I just made this sauce:
Jalapeños
Nonfat greek yogurt
3 garlic clove
Cilantro
Salt
Combine in a blender.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:45 |

The only one I like is Tapa tio. I’m not a fan of the vinegar based ones and Cholula is just not the flavor I care for.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:47 |

I’d highly recommend some Chimay if you ever come across it. The heat is a good step up above most regular hot sauces,
but so are the flavors.
Also it’s hard to go wrong with chili garlic oil
when plain-tasting
starches or veggies are involved.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:49 |

Tapatio is my go to, good heat, flavor and readily available. I like Cholula’s Chipotle sauce for a milder heat and sweeter flavor...I like the Cholula Chipotle with my breakfast hot sauce needs, Tapatio for most other times. Regular Cholula or Valentina if I can’t get Tapatio
El Yucateco if you want heat with little sauce...it doesn’t take much.
Walkerswood Jamaican Scotch Bonnet sauce for a different flavor occasionally.
Louisiana for regular non-Mexican sauce, cheap, good and widely available. Crystal works too.
Franks for buffalo sauce.
Si aracha for Asian foods, or that sauce they give in the little packets which I like a lot.
Then there’s the millions of boutique sauces, but to me these are the easy to find grocery options that I always have.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 12:50 |

Funny you mentioned that. Huy Fong foods had problems with their neighbors because of the smell permeating the neighborhood w here their factory is located.

Go to Chick-fil-A. They have little packets of it which make for a good sample.

Now I want to see the movie about the grocery store lobster that escapes and ends out floating down the Ohio River to the Mississippi in hopes of finding love in New Orleans. Spoiler alert; it’ll be Ratatouille 2, and he ends out in a pot of Gumbo.
I used to work about 5 miles from their Eastgate location. I’d regularly drop by before work and see what unusual thing I could find in the discount area to grab to have for lunch that day.
They have some good deals on beer and wine as well.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 13:00 |
|
Hum- how weird is it that I’ve never asked for hot sauce there?
I guess it’s because most fast food sauces of any type (except Arby’s sauce) suck ass, so I always say no.
Thanks, I’ll check it out next time I go there.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 13:03 |

On the cheaper side, the big bottle of Valentina Extra Hot is always in my fridge.
Cholula, in all its varieties, is always a winner.
El Yucateco is another one that’s always in my fridge. It’s perfect on pizza.
If you can find it, and
don’t mind spending a little more, Yellowbird’s sauces are FANTASTIC.
The serrano and habanero are my favorites.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 13:05 |

That sounds relatively easy and not too odorous... Might give it a go

And a kickass cigar shop. For beer and wine, I’ve never had a problem getting wasted on $10 and a run to Arrow or Belmont Party Supply.

So far Louisiana is the best bang for buck I’ve purchased. There’s so much bang and it’s
so cheap.

Crystal is definitely more light and vinegary like Louisiana, since they’re both technically “Louisiana hot sauces.” They’re both super cheap, I just tend to like Crystal a little better.
Cholula, IMO, is amazing and really works on everything. I just don’t keep it around because the kids don’t appreciate quality :)

Secret Aardvark is a popular one. Queen Majesty scotch bonnet & ginger aint bad either.

If you’re looking for a little different, less vinegary flavor, order up some Swamp Dragon hot sauce. Instead of vinegar, they use distilled spirits as the base. Each creates a slightly different flavor profile.
The dragon clutch is an excellent taster pack.

I think most of us agree that Cholula slaps.
Here’s a more mild one that I put on everything.
Goes amazing with coconut shrimp

Green tabasco is, IMO excellent on chicken and fish. Normal tabasco is excellent with sausage dishes.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 14:54 |
|
I put normal Tabasco in stuff like gumbo, but in general avoid it because it’s not versatile enough (IMHO).
The variants (like green) are usually really good. I’m just talking about the original, which has a reputation way bigger than its quality.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 14:57 |
|
My take is that it’s very versatile, but in being vinegary, it changes the category of what you put it on. So it works on a huge number of things, but it changes them into Tabasco Foods, which don’t consistently appeal to every taste.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 14:59 |
|
Definitely. I think in general I prefer sauces that I can use on everyday foods — for example, if I want to enhance a hot dog or pizza, Tabasco (or most other “dense” sauces) are hard to get even coverage without overpowering the food. That’s where sweeter things like Sriracha work well -- easy, wide coverage.
For cooking chili or gumbo, I care a lot less since I’m just adding it to a big pot.

Crystal Extra Hot (yes, there’s an extra hot!) is my favorite of the Louisiana-style vinegary sauces.
For something a lil’ different, I’ve been putting the Palo Alto Firef

S

ots of paprika flavor. Paprika is magic.

(I’m singling you out to say this because it seems to be something you’d enjoy)
Ever take an Avacado half and fill the “bowl” of it with hotsauce? The fat and creaminess brings out the flavors really well.

Arizona Gunslinger Mega Diablo Habanero... Sooooooo good.
![]() 06/13/2019 at 17:41 |

I do a lot of that but I usually start with Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce and start adding peppers and stuff. Lately I’ve been adding a little ranch dressing and jalapenos for a creamier fire sauce...

Yeah, I hate ranch too, as a stand-alone. I’m a blue cheese fanatic. But I had an old sauce dork make me a ranchy barbecue dip that blew my mind so I mess around with it sometimes as an additive...

There’s a wing chain here in Phoenix called Zipp’s, and they have a buffalo sauce they call Golden Buffalo. The Golden denotes that it’s got just a touch of honey in it. I prefer my wings boneless, because it’s crazy to not take advantage of the technology of the modern world and use a fork to eat a couple pounds of chicken... Any way, they know me as the “Sauce Delivery Guy” because I’m always saying I only eat food to avoid drinking sauce. So I go in there I order my wings breaded but not sauced. Then I order two cups of the Golden Buffalo sauce, two cups of blue cheese, and a bowl to mix things to my liking. It’s literally my favorite meal on earth...
![]() 06/19/2019 at 15:12 |

That sounds good, negative points for ordering boneless...jk. I moved to NC not too long ago and i just discovered honey and hot sauce, that stuff is a game changer on a chicken bisquit.
